DAY 18 SATURDAY 28 MAY 2016 ALICANTE and Surrounding Areas

Lovely Saturday morning, Paul is limping around with his bad right knee and ankle. He’s taking Alieve to help but we shall need a Pharmacia to buy some IBufin cream. First, we must find a hardware store to buy a replacement 3 outlet connector plug because we donated ours to the AC Carlton up in Madrid. Oops!! Once we got to the car and found with some difficulty Paul can still drive the stick shift as well as managing the brake pedal. Off to  the Leroy Merlin store comparable to a Home Depot in the USA. Jane went in and Paul found a waiting area outside to preclude him trying to walk around inside the HUGE store. Jane found a plug after asking several employees where the electrical section was located. Then we sought out a Pharmacy which took us into the outer
suburbs of Alicante. An ATM was then located and we were finally ready to strike out to Campello to visit with Gill Fischer-Morgan. Paul found the Chinese buffet and bars where we had met up with Gill during last year’s trip. We parked and ambled into for a Bitter Kas to await Gill. Gill arrived on time fresh from the hairdresser appointment, looking fit and trim and beautiful no less. We piled into her new car and went to her local for a pre-lunch drinkie. While sitting outside there were a few droplets of rain and so we packed in to go for lunch. We also met her friend Victor a retired UK policeman married to a local gal. Same as the year before 2015 we went to the Cove Resturante overlooking the harbor and Yacht club below.
Paul and Jane had the Sea Bass fish and Gill enjoyed a roasted chicken. Another outstanding meal, afterwards we took a few photos to actually prove we had met up together again and drove down into the beach area. Again a short walk to sidewalk café for refreshment sitting and watching the population moseying by our umbrella/table. Gill volunteers by translating for non Spanish speaking Brits when they need medical care. It is quite harrowing for her. Some of these people have very severe illnesses or need surgery but she willingly holds their hands, comforts them and sees them through the best way she can. It still blows my mind that people can come and live here for 6 months a year for 25 or more years and only speak a “smattering” of Spanish! I so admire her for doing this because it really takes a toll on her.
Then we had happy times telling old war stories and hearing about Gill’s dealing with the Basque Education board over her years of teaching but not having the Basque qualification stamp. Anyway she finally succeeded in the beaureacratic processes to have her retirement approved and implemented. All of that took another class of wine to complete at 7:30 it was time to return into Alicante all of 15 miles away. We decided that our light meal for the evening would be small sandwiches or bar snacks during the BIG soccer match between Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid playing Rome for the title of Madrid Champions.
The bar sandwhiches were delicious but of course way too much food to eat. We crawled down the corridor to Room 141 and packed in for a thoroughly enjoyable Saturday with great friends, great wine, and great food. No real rush in the morning as we are only driving about 145 k to Cartagena.
